bilton contemporary art presents

Sculptural Traces, by Red Deer College Instructor Ian Cook, will be held from January 8 to February 20, 2010, at bilton contemporary art. The official opening is set for Thursday, January 14 from 7 to 9 pm with the artist in attendance.

Ian’s work in this exhibit spans the years from 1986 to 2009 and include the following series:

Dolman, Prairie Fences, Elevated Stone, The Temple Series, The Waterfall Series, and the most recent The Tornado Series, which deals with climate change and unpredictable weather patterns. His work is based on the classic elements of Air, Water and Earth and the transformative forces within Nature on man-made structures.

David More, a well-known local artist has this to say about Ian’s work:

“Through a sensitive eye and skilled hands, Ian has found a unique sculptural imagery. He melds engineered, man-made forms with the natural, often in a titanic balance. These pieces hold us in suspense: forces held at a teetering moment, daring us to imagine the outcome. They are epic in their tension.”

Born in Edmonton, Ian Cook completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary, including a Bachelor of Education Degree (Art Major) in 1967 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (Sculpture) in 1970.  He graduated with a Masters of Visual Art (Sculpture) from the University of Alberta in 1972.

Ian Cook’s art career includes two interconnected dimensions, one being that of a college art instructor and the other being a practicing artist. In the summer of 1972, Ian was hired by Red Deer College to instruct its two University Transfer courses.  In that same academic year, he wrote a proposal for an intensive two-year Visual Art Program, which was submitted to the Department of Advanced Education and approved for an intake of students in the fall of 1973. Ian continues to enjoy a teaching career at Red Deer College which spans over thirty-five years; over twenty of which have been as Chair of the Visual Art Program.

Between 1983 and 2009, Ian has been active as a sculptor working in cast bronze.  He has lead many Summer Series Bronze Casting courses at RDC.  His sculptures can be found in many collections including: The Alberta Foundation for the Arts – Art Collection, The Canada Council Art Bank, The University of Alberta Collection, The TELUS Collection, RDC Permanent Art Collection, etc. His sculptures have been exhibited nationally as well as internationally. Ian continues his studio practice in both Red Deer and Calgary.
